Niall Horan - Heaven | Drum cover

Recorded on 2023-07-01 by yours truly

So at last here it is.

A while ago I recorded a version of Heaven, but felt like it wasn't good enough to be released. In all honesty, I wasn't planning on ever retrying it. But after someone requested it, I figured I could give it one more try.

Instead of Dead by Normandie, Scavengers by Thrice or Solway Firth by Slipknot, I decided to record Heaven tonight. It took a very long time to get this attempt, and it's nowhere near perfect.

I'll explain it all here, but really the main reason is the fact that I started recording at 19:00, and since I have neighbours and all I can only play till 20:00. This attempt was finished at 19:57.

Timing is... off at a couple of points, but it's getting more consistent.

But the tambourine decided to randomly not register some hits, the ending is a bit off and the hihat hits in the second verse are nowhere near loud enough. There's also a bit too much low-end on the drums — the kick is a tad bit too punchy for my liking.

The most important part though — the start is damn near perfect. By chance? Hell no. I just turned on a metronome 🙈 But I hate the metronome in regular playing. So I had to download a half an hour long metronome video and extract the audio, cut it off in GarageBand when I want my inner metronome to take the wheel.

To put it into context, this is what it looked like. You can see me in the video bobbing by head up and down to the metronome, but because I obviously didn't include it in the final mix, it looks like I'm horrible at keeping time.

In reality though, the actual instruments start playing at a really weird moment. I think it's around about 1/16th note after the beat. Before I had the metronome, I would start after the bass glide sound. However, since it's so hard to time it well, I... gave up. That's what happened the first time, and was about to happen again.

Oh well... this might be a bit cheaty, but it sounds alright and no one gives a rat's ass.

So let us move on to the parts of the cover that I am genuinely proud of.

I pretty much nailed the start, the limb independence (mostly for the arms) required to play the song like I do is pretty advanced for such a simple song, and I patched up the ending pretty well. I think you can work out where I screwed up. Most people will however not even hear it.

That concludes this cover.

Next up are probably Dead and Scavengers. Or Almost Easy (A7X).

That's it. You've reached the bottom.
